Project-61: The 61-Day Challenge for Truck Drivers

Hypertension. Obesity. High cholesterol. These are the common health problems almost 67% of truck drivers are facing and the reason behind this is no physical activity. Now, the thing is there are no safe walking areas, or exercise facilities available at truck stops. But there are alternative options truckers can choose to monitor their habits, stay fit,t and prolong their lifespan. As for truckers life expectancy got shorter to 61 due to these reasons and this is 15-20 years less than the average US life expectancy.

Now, you can think how much impact this has on drivers. It’s a reality that cuts into their time with family, their ability to enjoy the fruits of their labor, and their chance to lead a fulfilling life. It’s a problem that is affecting the industry and everyone who depends on it.

To prior their health Project-61 is here. It’s all about making a movement for truckers to take control of their health. From November 1st to December 31st it is giving truckers a challenge to track habits, count steps from the StepUp app to stay active, and make healthier choices.

Therefore, Digital Permit Book is tackling this important problem as a Gold Sponsor in Project-61. Combined we hope to motivate drivers to regain control over their health and perhaps live out their lives with health.

Here’s how why taking control of your health truly matters with Project-61.

The Consequences of Poor Health in Trucking

Stressful working conditions associated with trucking make the overall health of drivers to be very poor thus causing more damage on health and industry-wide repercussions.  Almost 6.7/10 CDL drivers are having poor health due to the stressful work conditions. They forget they have life too and they should give importance to it.

Impact on CDL Drivers

Reduced Time with Family:

Most truck drivers spend long durations on the road and they end up having issues with their families. The physical separation, combined with irregular communication, can erode familial bonds over time. A cross-sectional survey revealed that about 28% of truck drivers suffer from feelings of loneliness while 27% struggle with depression something that would eventually isolate them from their families.

Inability to Enjoy the Fruits of Their Labor:

The sedentary lifestyle and limited access to healthy food options contribute to health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases among truck drivers. These conditions can affect their quality of life which in turn would reduce their ability to fully enjoy their income as well as free time.

Limited Chances to Lead a Fulfilling Life:

The impact of long time isolation, chronic diseases, and distressing psychological situations can result in the loss of subjective well-being among truck drivers. This not only affects their personal happiness but also their overall life satisfaction. The divorce rate among truck drivers stands at 40.5%, the second-highest of any industry, underscoring the personal toll of the profession.

Introducing Project-61

What is Project-61?

Project-61 is a groundbreaking health initiative designed to combat the health crisis in the trucking industry. Starting November 2024 and ending December 31, 2024, this movement gives power back to the truck drivers to get healthier by making them aware of their health status as well as giving them ideas on what to do.

Project-61’s mission is to tackle this statistic: the average life expectancy of a CDL driver is just 61 years, a mere 15-20 years off the American average. This is unacceptable, and Project-61 is here to make a change.

The Challenge

Project-61 encourages truckers to participate in the 61-Day Step Challenge, where participants track their habits, monitor their steps using the StepUp app, and make healthier lifestyle choices.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Track Your Steps: Download the StepUp app to log daily activity.
  2. Join the Community: Become part of the PROJECT 61 Group on StepUp and track progress alongside fellow truckers and supporters.
  3. Take Action: Commit to moving daily and making small but impactful changes for a healthier future.

Why Project-61 Exists

The health of the trucking industry is at risk. Long working hours, unpredictable schedules, and poor facilities when it comes to good nutrition are true for most truck drivers. The result is an alarming list of health challenges:

  • 69% of truckers are obesesome text
    • 30% suffer from hypertension
    • 11% have diabetes
    • 20% develop heart disease
  • 28 per 100,000 drivers die annually due to job-related health issues.
  • Only 15% exercise regularly and 25% have access to healthy food options.
  • The average sleep duration for drivers is just 5.5–6 hours, leading to fatigue and increased accident risks.
  • 15% of crashes are linked to health-related issues.
